“Agree – piece of junk” 2009-10-10
By Michael J. Anderson (Milford, NJ)
Same comments as others….Load software, works for a bit. Sometimes sound goes out by opening a miscellaneous program. Sometimes the unit doesn’t recognize the peripherals when the computer has been rebooted. Sometimes my HP laptop crashes. Maybe it’s something to do with HP compatibility as I’ve seen this a few times.

“Sorriest piece of junk I ever bought” 2008-04-08
By Wayne A. Moses (Houston, Texas)
I bought this Targus Docking Station with digital Audio thinking that it would be nice to free my laptop of all the wires attached to it, so that when I wanted to take it elsehwere I just had to unhook one wire. Besides, I was running out of USB ports and the price of this item seemed right.

Well, I got it installed well enough (had to recognize each and every component one at a time and load the drivers, but that was all right, I figured it was a one time deal).

It worked until I put the laptop to sleep as I do every night when I am done. When I woke the laptop the docking station forgot most of the peripherals plugged in, and took forever to figure out what they were and how to get them running again — I mean like 5 minutes or more, and I have a powerful HP Pavilion laptop running Vista Home Premium. So much for the as-advertised sleeping with the laptop and waking up with the laptop.

The other mistake I made was unplugging the docking station so that I could take the laptop to another room. Guess what happened when I plugged it back in? Failed to recognize my peripherals again. Reboot and even then stuff was not remembered. It had to re-learn all the drivers all over again.

Then there are the USB ports that seem to work when they feel good and ready to work.

How do I know it is not my laptop? I bought an HP docking station and simply plugged it in, plugged my stuff into it and bang! Worked right away. No reboot no nothing. Solid as a rock. Goes to sleep with the laptop and wakes with the laptop remembering everything perfectly. Works just as if it were part of the laptop and not an “extender”.

Now I have to give away this Targus junk. Maybe someone else will have better luck! I don’t have the time to waste fighting with this.

so much for “universal”. terrible compatibility issues with a brand new lenovo thinkpad running windows 7. video constantly crashes (windows media player, netflix instant, etc.), music programs ditto (itunes, etc.), and even the audio jack cuts out after 2 minutes every time. worthless piece of junk, better off plugging individual components directly into the laptop. waste of 100 bucks.

This was the only universal docking station I could find with five USB ports and it does not include an Ethernet port(don’t need it). Installation was a breezy 10-15 minutes. I made adjustment to the display monitor in Windows and then everything was complete. I don’t like the price, but it does what I need it to do.

“Dock of my Dreams” 2009-10-16
By Matt S
Okay, maybe I haven’t actually dreamed about docks, but if I did this would be the one.

I’m using a 22″ Viewsonic plugged into the dock via DVI port, and I have my printer, mouse, keyboard and external harddrive plugged into the dock’s various USB ports. I don’t have desktop speakers, but am thinking of adding them because I can plug them into the dock too.

all these items connect to my Sony Vaio through a single USB plug. So when I take my laptop away from my desk, I just unplug a single cable to disconnect from my mouse/keyboard/printer/monitor/HD. I would never have thought all those peripherals could connect through a single USB.

Tracking on my monitor is seamless…I see no delays. and I love using my monitor as an extension of my notebook screen…I’m able to keep my email open on one side, and my browser or other applications on the other.

For me, this installed easily and has worked flawlessly (I’ve been using it for about 2 weeks now).

Finally, I really like the mini-tower design and small size.

Highly recommended!

“Targus acp50us ok product, really bad seller” 2010-02-23
By L. Gerson
The Targus video PC dock worked but had a quirk that made you reset the video output each time you turned on the computer. Very annoying. Tried to return the product but even thou the seller had a return policy of 7 days, he said and I quote” you can return it but I am not sending a refund as the product is working”.

“Targus Universal Notebook Docking Station with video” 2010-02-22
By Howard Hendricks (Hawaii)
I travel between several offices and it is a pain to connect all of the hardware to my laptop (I know – stop whining) trip. This docking station keeps it simple. The one drawback I have may not be the fault of the docking station – I have to connect the external monitor directly to the laptop in order to use both screens. This requires two connections instead of the advertised one. Very minor in the big picture (sorry – pun unintended).

“THE WORST” 2009-12-09
By Roger D. Osburn (Stillwater, OK, US)
We have two of the Targus universal docking stations in our office (for Lenovo 3000 N200 laptops) and they are without a doubt the WORST imaginable device I’ve encountered. After just a few weeks the ports went out one by one until none worked at all. After repeated requests for a replacement a Targus rep finally did respond and allowed me to return one of the replicators. The replacement is no better. I will not purchase anything else with the Targus name. The only reason this review is getting a 1-star rating is because I could not give it a 0-star rating!

“Horrible Product” 2009-09-23
By K. Sweeney (Phila, PA)
Stay away from this product. Targus is awful. I have tried multiple times to get this docking station to work. Finally, after many attempts, I was successful. However, it only functioned for a short time – since once I took my laptop elsewhere I could never get it reconfigured! Some may believe we should all be computer technicians and know a priori how to get a product to work. But that is not the point – we deserve as customers to have a product function easily, at least comparatively – and honestly, do we all have time to be technicians? I certainly pay too much for many products for this to be the case. Most importantly, this product does not meet normal standards for functionality, ease of use and customer service.

So I agree with the prior reviews: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Targus is awful. To attempt any contact with customer service will only result in complete frustration. Believe me, I tried. And forget about the website – you will get lost in a continuous loop.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Targus. I will never purchase a thing from this company again!

“Best I could do” 2010-02-04
By Monette L. Bebow Reinhard (Wisconsin)
I wanted a port for my laptop, one I could attach peripherals to, that would also elevate the screen. I realize I could have gotten these separately, and perhaps, should this one die as my Logitech one did, I would do that instead. The drawback on this one – and I knew it head of time, is that the ’sleeve’ hinders access to the laptop keyboard. I have a wireless keyboard attached to the port, but there is a delayed reaction to accessing it.

What’s supposedly a good thing is that I can tell this port device to ’stop working’ as I would with, say, an attached memory device, for easy removing. But HP told me with this laptop to shut it down completely before removing a wireless mouse & keyboard, so I just got in the habit of doing that instead.

It’s not a bad buy for the money. I doubt I would get it again.

“an oustanding choice” 2010-01-31
By T. Pham
If you have to use your laptop for more than a few hours, the chance is that you are hurting your back posture as I found out the hard way. Sitting slumped to be able to read the laptop screen (designed to be much lower than eye level) is a certain cause for upper back and neck pain.

Occasional email checking is fine but more serious work would require you to level your eyeballs in such a way to give you a correct sitting posture.

That’s when this device comes in.

It conveniently slots your laptop securely to allow you to unfold & lift your laptop screen to bring it to your eye level. In the process, you will be sitting upright looking at the screen.

Other bonus features include an USB cable to connect your laptop to the docking station with an in-built Ethernet port, 5x USB 2.0 ports, microphone & sound.

Once setting up, all your peripherals can be hooked up to the docking station allowing you to unhook the laptop and leave under 60 seconds.

A solid constructed piece.

Highly recommended.

“Definitely does not conserve workspace — requires a large surface area” 2009-09-25
By Mahlers2nd
I recently started to work from home and wanted to set up a dual monitor system and use my ergo keyboard and trackball. I have a Dell Inspiron which doesn’t have a docking station so figured I would try a stand instead of a universal docking station because I was hoping to save a bit on desk space. Despite an earlier review that indicated that this stand has a footprint as large as the laptop itself, I decided to take a chance.

The other reviewer was right. This actually takes up more desk space than just the laptop itself. However, it also raises the total height of the unit to where if you have bookshelves above where your monitor would stand (as is common with many cubicle spaces), you would probably hit the bottom of the shelves as well.

In addition, the USB port/docking port is lacking a 9-pin (or is it 15-pin) monitor connector so you still have to plug and unplug an external monitor into the laptop. So using this docking station I still wind up having to plug 3 separate items into the computer every time I dock it: The monitor plug, the USB cable for the docking station and the power plug. To me, that isn’t saving much in the way of setting up or take down.

The build quality is solid — my laptop is 15.4″ (screen) and it fits easily into the stand. The entire is very solid feeling and it looks nice. I just wish it made things a bit more compact or convenient from a plug perspective. About the only “net benefit” is that the stand hides the keyboard (turning it into a “copy stand” and it raises the height of the laptop display to be at a more ergonomic angle.

I am keeping the unit despite its shortcomings. I guess my advice is just be aware of what you are looking for in a universal docking station. If it is for ease of grabbing your laptop and going and to save space, this isn’t going to be the write solution for you.

“used usb to connect and no problems” 2010-03-07
By blaccatz (sc, usa)
I got the BlacX Duet (model ST0014U) to back up my hard drives when my primary computer stopped booting. Connected via USB and have not had any problems whatsoever. Have been able to look at and copy data off two drives at once – very easy to use. Was even able to get data off a hard drive that the old computer says is completely corrupted. Not using this for permanent connection to the hard drives so I’m not sure about others issues but this one has been working perfect for what I need. I’ve not used for hd over 500 gigs but the box for the duet says this one supports SATA hard drives up to 2TB.

“Did not work” 2010-03-05
By Abhilash Kushwaha (Los Angeles, CA)
This product did not work for me. I bought it because my laptop died and I had no way to access the data.

After reading all the 5-star reviews I decided to buy it. Unfortunately, this device did not work. For some reason it kept disconnecting. I went to device manager to re-install the drivers but that did not solve the problem.

My hard-disks would show up for a couple of seconds before it disconnected. After visiting countless sites and spending over 6-hours trying to get it to work, I finally gave up and applied for refund.

“I feel strongly both ways…” 2010-03-01
By Chris (Midwest USA)
Before buying this, I read most of the reviews here and elsewhere. I always look for validation of a reviewers raves or rants and I was concerned about the strong rants against the BlacX. After much research and comparison to other brands and their reviews, I bought a BlacX N0028USU… mainly because the rants against it were no worse than the rants against all other brands.

However, it wasn’t long before I started to worry this purchase was a mistake because it behaved like a lot of the complaints posted here… my PC recognized it ONCE and then not again. So then I tried it with a newer PC and it worked better. OK… must be a quirk of the older BIOS on the 1st PC. Flashed an update on the old PC… no better. So I searched Themaltake’s site for some clues or help. Not much luck. After several days of struggling with it, I tried several Google searches and discovered a driver at Thermaltake’s site that I had not found before. It TOTALLY solved all the issues I was experiencing. I am now using it with several drives and 2 different PCs, all with no problems whatsoever.

As for all the claims of this box dying suddenly after a few weeks… I can’t say. But as of right now (a little over a week old) I am very happy with it. SO I give it 4 stars because it ended up being a great piece of hardware. If it had started that way right out of the box, I would give it 5.

“USB/Sata2 docking Station” 2010-02-28
By Maurice (Orcutt, California)
Thermaltake BlacX eSATA USB Docking Station

Very good, I wish I had known about this a year ago.
Worked perfectly.

You do need your motherboard configured for eSATA AHCI mode for it to be detected for hot plug connecting.
Other wise, using the SATA cable, you have to power up the computer with it connected and on to be detected.
Speed using the eSATA connection is the same as the internal drives.

On my computer with with the newer drives USB maxes out at 35 mb/sec. eSATA connection is about 125 mb/sec.
Some old SATA drives are at 70 mb/sec with the SATA cable. USB remains the same.

Amazon’s price is about 1/2 of Best Buy for the same product.

I recommend it in spite of it being plastic.

Also it uses the same external power supply as some of my external drives, 12VDC/2AMP, so I didn’t even use it’s power supply, but used the one connected to my UPS that I use for my other external drives.

I haven’t tried it on the 2.5 inch drives as the only ones I have are PATA interface.

“Solid performance for daily backups on Linux” 2010-02-26

I have been using the BlacX for five months now and it has given solid performance.

I’m using it with Linux (Debian Stable (Lenny)) via USB. There were no driver issues, I plugged it into USB and it was immediately recognized as a USB storage device. Plugged in a drive, partitioned, formatted and mounted it without a hiccup.

I use it for an off-site backup, so I swap drives once a week.

“HP delivers a solid product” 2010-03-08
By Eric A. Kemsuzian (Buckeye Centre)
We have had many a Dell in this home and my office. I have had good to great results with Dell products in the past. HP has caught and passed Dell in sales and now they seem to have a solid grasp on the needs of the home/office consumer as well. The unit is well built and sounds extraordinary. The wireless keyboard and mouse work well and seem to be made well. The ability to place a HP back up hard drive (not included) inside is a real plus. I did have two minor complaints. First, you need to purchase another power converter to capitalize on the portability and ease that a docking station is to provide. Secondly I’m disappointed that the power must be plugged in from the back of the unit that prevents from pushing the station back against the wall or back splash on my counter. This keeps the unit another 1.5″ from the wall and on a traditional 24″ deep counter, add the keyboard and you get crowded towards the front edge of the work surface. If you have a deeper work space this will be a non issue. I have tried to locate a 90 deg. adapter but alas to no avail. Still, this unit can be purchased for only 99.00 USD with free shipping from HP, via Amazon. I also purchased an additional power converter at Amazon for <25.00 USD, but not from HP direct as they want 65 bucks + shipping? The sound is impressive, add a nice monitor and you’ll get more desktop out of your laptop than you expect!

“Pleased So Far!” 2010-02-11
By Kevin R. Bartoe (Byron, GA)
I purchased this docking station about a month ago. I read a lot of reviews concerning it before I decided to purchase. Once again HP has worked for me. From out of the box until I had my laptop up and running, about 20 min. I wanted to be able to use my laptop as my desktop as my older HP PC was “slowing down”. The docking station has worked perfectly so far. The single cable connection worked great and it does connect me to everything with no noticeable degradation of performance. The built in speakers sound OK but would probably not be acceptable to gamers or folks really into music. I use the built in speakers in my 24″ monitor anyway so it’s not really an issue. You really do need to purchase a separate (90 Watt) power supply unless you don’t mind hooking up the one that came with your laptop. I, like several other reviewers would have liked a DVI port and VGA port instead of just a VGA port. HDMI would have also been useful if you are connecting this to a HD capable monitor. I am only able to display what is on my laptop on my main screen as the desktop extension option doesn’t seem to work (due to one video card on the laptop). Overall, I have been pleased with my choice. Setup was easy, connecting to the laptop is easy. I have not attempted to use the HP portable drive expansion dock although the cover is a bit cantankerous to deal with. If you do use a drive like this, suggest leaving the cover off. Other than that I’m a “happy docker”. Thank you HP.

“HP xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station” 2010-02-05
By Roy Schwartzman (Greensboro, NC)
This is identical to the docking station sold at HP’s web site, but for about HALF the price! Good quality built-in speakers. One connection to most HP notebooks makes for easy docking/removal. Headphone, mic, firewire & 2 USB ports on right side (handier than having everything in back). All other ports (including video & 4 more USB) are on back. Easy backlit on/off & touch control for volume are on top front of unit. Super-sturdy platform for notebook will hold the heaviest clunker. This is a very high quality product, & the height/angle of the platform adjust to fit under an elevated external monitor. By far the best docking station I’ve used (compared to Gateway & Lenovo).

“Gets the job done” 2010-02-28
By rk2000
I bought this for my Thinkpad x200, so I wouldn’t need to keep reconnecting my mouse, keyboard, ext HDD, and monitor every time I work at my desk. The peripherals all worked as soon as I plugged them in, but I needed to mess around downloading/updating the Kensington software before I could get the monitor to work (Samsung 2233SW). But once I got it to work the first time, it worked pretty consistently.

Two issues I have:
1. When the laptop goes to sleep, sometimes the monitor doesn’t work when it wakes up. I need to reboot to get it back. This happens maybe 25% of the time when it sleeps.
2. There’s a slight stutter on the monitor. It’s definitely usable, but noticeable when moving the mouse quickly, or on video (especially full screen).

Overall though, I’m pretty happy with it.

Stay away from it If you are an idiot, it works after some troubleshooting.

I used my Viliv S5 as my main computer for about 6 months and I could NOT have done so without this thing, now I got a brand new laptop and I’m selling this dock for $80 :) .

Does what it says, the viliv S5 has only one USB, a single USB wire would run from the s5 (or anything) to the dock and the dock will provide, 5 powered USB ports, lan, sound/mic and video good enough to drive a 22″ samsung lcd monitor at 1080p. (NO HD VIDEO! just that high resolution for your workspace)

I got it to work with XP/VISTA/7 you will need to play with it for a few minutes to get to work, but if you are lazy and inpatient or just a moron you are not going to get it, ask yourself this “do I get easily frustrated with computers ?” if your answer is one/all of the following; ‘Yes’, ’sometimes’, ‘define computers’, ‘nobody knows technolo

“Works, probably as good as you will get” 2010-03-02
By Melanie Mumme
Unfortunately when I bought my laptop I did not bother to check whether or not it had a docking station designed for it, well it does not, so I went searching for a universal. I have a 22″ monitor, two external hard drives, wireless keyboard and mouse, speakers, printer and cooling pad all hooked up to it. Initially my speakers did not work, after finding the newest driver and updating/installing it, I have had no problems with the speakers. Having said that there are a few issues still, the biggest and most frustrating is the monitor, when you have an external monitor hooked up sometimes the device goes birzirk and can’t configure properly, the monitors will go on and off every 30 seconds, requiring a restart, the only time this happens is when coming out of sleep mode, and it does not happen every time, so your guess is as good as mine. Other than that the only minor issues I have found are the occasional (fairly rare) delay of mouse/keyboard activity on the external monitor (a 3 second delay at most, and again it does not happen often) and the device does not like to recognize one of my external hard drives IF it is on before the docking station, (it recognizes just fine if it is off and I flip it on after the docking station is on) however it is an off off brand, not the greatest at all; the device has recognized every other storage device I have thrown at it, so I am pretty sure it is just the low quality nature of that particular hard drive, it is temperamental all by itself, so I don not blame this docking station. I have not tried the video out yet, but I will and follow up here. For the most part I am very happy with the device, I know only have one usb plugged into my lappy, so much easier to unplug to take with me, although I must admit there are better prices out there if you search well enough.

So now I have my high-speed online college workstation!

After considering the docking station designed for my Laptop – I looked into this Toshiba device as an alternative. I checked it out first at Best Buy – where it was selling for $150. Here at Amazon, it was 2/3rds of that price.

It arrived 2 working days after I ordered it – as promised. Installation was a breeze – and the video display is terrific. I need to upgrade my speakers to make the sound work right – but on my headset it sounds great.

It is nice to have a son who knows his way around computers and accessories. This pick works well with my laptop so that I can use the bigger screen and keyboard at home, and quickly unplug for those times when I am working away from my desk. It is so simple and easy to install and use. The only problem, but that is infrequent, is when the docking station does not sync up. Easy solution is to unplug the docking station and replug. Works every time!

“Perfect for what I needed…” 2010-02-10
By Michelle Fadeley (Chicago, IL)
I am using this docking station with my Toshiba satellite laptop computer. Currently I do not have a separate monitor for my laptop, but needed a docking station that would allow me to easily disconnect my laptop from all the cords (external devices abound) so that I could use the laptop wirelessly without all the pain that comes from unplugging 5-10 different things and re-plugging them all, and sometimes having to restart my computer. This docking station is exactly what I was looking for. It connects & disconnects easily, and all of my external devices are able to plug into the back of it (except the wireless receptor for mouse/keyboard I still plug directly to the laptop), with still 2 free usb ports on the front for things such as my camera or pen drives. In fact, because of this docking station, I was able to toss out two malfunctioning usb ports that i had to use due to the fact that my laptop only offered 3 usb ports of its own. This docking station came with the most ports I could find close to this price range (it comes with 6 total, most others came with 3 or 4), and the front two can be used to charge devices without the laptop having to be on to charge them. Also, the external speakers I use are plugged into the docking station and sound exactly as they did when directly plugged into the laptop. All my other devices are working great and are being recognized by my laptop through the docking station.
I’ve had the docking station for only a month now, but i have had zero problems with it, and have used my laptop wirelessly numerous times since purchasing it; before, I avoided using it altogether because of the pain with all the wires. The price is great, the functionality is great, and the benefits of using this docking station really couldn’t be better. I can’t think of anything else I would ask for in a docking station that this one doesn’t already have.

Very easy to use. Install takes a few minutes, but after that it’s plug and play. Might need to select your audio device, but that is easy via the dynadock shortcut. Great sound! Wireless keyboard & mouse, 24″ monitor, laser printer, headset, LAN, speakers all plugged into the dynadock and running great. Only AC adapter and one cable plugged into my laptop. Nice!

“Pretty good… you get what you pay for” 2010-02-01
By G. Clark (Lawrence, KS, USA)
I ordered this docking station based on some of the reviews I read and especially because of the low price.

After receiving the docking station, I quickly realized I was going to need assistance because it did not come with drivers for Windows 7. After a quick email to customer service, I was emailed the appropriate drivers and was up and running pretty quickly (answer from customer service came in less than 24 hours, which was great).

For the most part, this docking station is easy to use and does what it’s supposed to. I wish there was a way to charge the laptop while it’s docked without having to connect another cord to the laptop, but unfortunately there isn’t. There are actually a total of 4 cords that we have connected to the laptop to get everything you would get from a desktop (power cord, two cords that connect to the docking station and a cord to connect speakers).

The monitor connects like a projector, so you may have to change your settings to be able to keep the laptop lid closed while you’re working. Sometimes the resolution is off (large icons show up), but that is an easy fix by pressing the Windows key+P.

The only problem we have had is that from time to time our wireless keyboard and mouse lose their connectivity. Usually this fixes itself pretty quickly, but sometimes a restart fixes it immediately.

Overall, I am satisfied with the docking station. I know if I had paid a little more I would have gotten a little nicer product. But for the money, this certainly does what is says it will and is a much cheaper option than some of the other docking stations I looked at for Dell Inspiron laptops.

“Only Adequate” 2010-01-05
By j2ink (California)
This product does what it says it will do, but it’s really not very efficient. First, there is not just one connection to make every time the laptop is connected to the docking station — there are at least three. First, the USB cable must be attached, second, the VGA plug, and third, the power supply for the laptop. Fortunately, all three of these connect to one side of my laptop. If they didn’t, it would be even more of a hassle. A fourth connection is necessary if you want to connect external speakers, because the docking station cannot handle this.

Another hassle is that the laptop must be at least partially open for the docking station to function. So, if you want to slide the laptop under a monitor stand while it is connected to the docking station, you will need to be careful not to close the laptop too far, or it will shut down.

Perhaps all of this is self-evident to some people, but I was expecting something like my previous docking station, where I simply slid the closed laptop into the dock, snapped it into place, pushed the docking station power button, and everything was connected. Compared to that, this is a pretty lame system

Another problem that probably will be corrected soon is that the installation disk does not include the drivers for Windows 7, and I could not find them on the manufacturer’s website. I had to send customer service an email, and then wait until after the weekend for them to respond. They sent me a website URL to download the drivers and the instructions how to install them. Everything works so far. It’s just not a very efficient system, but perhaps this is the best that can be done connecting a docking station through a USB.

This product advertised to use one USB cable to connect laptop to all devices. Not true. In order for video to work, there is an additional cable. It works okay after a call to tech services. Not impressed, but will keep because too much hassle to send back.

“Works well initially, with compromises, then the problems “ 2009-11-20
By D. Lin (San Francisco)
I use my new Cables To Go 28652 Docking station at home on a personal Dell XPS, and a work HP Elitebook 6930p. Both running Vista 32 bit. Connected to Viewsonic large LCD screen, Dell keyboard and Logitech mouse.
Pros:
everything connected to it works perfectly.
universal design.
price.
Cons:
no mic/head phone jacks. the workaround is to plug to the computer, or try a audio usb adapter but i’m cautiously optimistic on the sound reproduction.
Improveables (wish list):
1. more USB ports would be useful. the 3 built-ins for me are occupied by an external hard-drive and a multi function printer, leaving only one open for now (may get used to address the con though).
if you need more, you’ll need usb extender or connect the components directly to the laptop. I like the solution HP offers the most which i use at work. It is a snap-in design that does it all in one step, though it is a dedicated design for specific HP models only. another option is to go wireless on some of this…hmmm.
2. industrial design. the way this docking station situates is more aptly described as just sort of hanging on the desk, next to the external monitor and behind the laptop. as opposed to securely sitting in position – leading to a messy display of the exposed cables.
3. ethernet connection setup could be easier. it is not plug & play. though i am happy with the wireless, the plug-in comes in handy when needed.
Not sure:
how it will work with Windows 7. though I’m not worried because of the current positive experience.

Finally, for me the pros outweigh the improveables and cons, so Cables To Go stays :)

edit (11.23.09), changed from 4 stars to 2:
couple days into using the purchase and it has developed an external keyboard and mouse problem. every few minutes it will freeze for 10 to 20 seconds. this does not happen with the laptop(s) keys/mouse. i will troubleshoot and update on finding.
after talking to the Cables to go tech support twice, which were courteous and prompt, it is determined to be the docking station hardware issue. I will do a return. what i learned in this is that since I’ve plugged and unplugged the peripherals so many times, the process does not seem so bad as plugging directly to the laptop ensures perfect working order. i am ordering a usb extender to take care of all except for sound and the external monitor – that should be a reliable and inexpensive solution. In the future i plan to get laptops from manufacturers that make proprietary docking stations. i think HP, Levono and Apple are strong in that.

“Convenient, but irritating…” 2010-03-09
By H. Scoggins (Houston, Texas)
We purchased this unit for my wife’s new HP notebook. It works great, and provides all the ports and connections she needs, with the convenience of a single connector to the notebook.

Only one problem; the audio connection is constantly “whining,” with static and noise to the external monitor’s speakers, and what appears to be matching “noise” on the external display. If I disconnect the external monitor from the dock, and connect it directly to external monitor on the notebook, the problem disappears. Even leaving the external monitor’s speakers connected to the external audio port on the dock, the sound clears up as soon as I disconnect the video from the dock.

I contacted HP about the problem, and they said they had not heard this complaint from anyone else. They sent out a replacement unit, but it has exactly the same problem.

“Has significant issues that make me sorry I bought it” 2010-02-16
By Eric Fisk (Seattle, WA United States)
I bought an HP notebook specifically for the docking capability, as I wanted a desktop replacement. The quickdock has some major issues that I have seen with 64 bit Windows 7:
1. The sound has a lot of background hiss and crackle, to the point that you simply can’t use speakers with the docking station.
2. The computer will not automatically sleep or hibernate when left idle and while docked. This is a drain on electricity and the life of the laptop.
3. No power cable, as mentioned by many people, means this dock will be a $200 investment when all is said and done.

Other than that, no issues, but I expected more since HP makes all the hardware in this arrangement. I also have a business laptop from HP that has a push-down docking solution instead of a plug, and that has none of these problems.

“HP QuickDock 2.0 Docking Station” 2010-02-10
By Dan (Southern California)
Works very well as advertised. I agree that the cord is very stiff and difficult to tuck away. I solved this by getting a cooling pad and stand ($50) that raises the laptop up on an angle. Now the dock goes right underneath the laptop and it works quite well. I wish HP would put the docking port on the rear of the laptop instead of the side.

“Docking cable on side is annoying” 2010-02-06
By P. Brown
Pros: small, compact and easy to stow underneath a monitor (like I do); has enough USB outlets (easily accessible, as they are on the side); if you aren’t a fan of docking stands and cradles, this is a nice change of pace. Thanks to being so small, you can take this dock with you on the road to use elsewhere, if necessary.

Cons: And the biggest one… the gigantic cable on the side of the product. If the cable was located at the rear of the unit (instead of up front and on the side of the unit), it would be excellent. The cable juts out and isn’t flexible, so it takes up enough space on your desk to be irritating. I’m not sure why HP made that part so cumbersome and awkward; normally, they think about looks, but they missed the mark here. If you hate visible, short, HUGE cables, then think hard about purchasing.
